Harvard Rocks

Here are a few photos from a recent trip we took to the Harvard Museum of Natural History. I posted more words about this visit on our family blog, where as on this site today I shall keep the focus more on the photos.

I was happy that this photo captured the iridescence of this Labradorite

The rocks only held the smaller children's attention for a short time, then to the window they went!

Carlo's Bake Shop - Hoboken

Carlo's Bake Shop sits nearly hidden on Washington Street (or I guess it has technically been renamed Carlo's Bakery Way) in Hoboken, NJ. You might walk right past and completely miss the little shop... if it weren't for the crowds of people lined up for a city block and half, that is. Thanks, in large part, to the successful TLC special "Cake Boss" people come from miles around for a chance to elbow their way up to the glass cabinets and sample cupcakes, chocolate cannolis, lobster tails, and countless other pastries.

As we wandered through Hoboken a couple of weeks ago, however, we discovered that the line that morning consisted of a mere five people! We glanced down the block, but there was no sign of the typical queue along side the CVS. A stop at the bakery was not even in our plans (we were headed to Manhattan) but you just don't pass up on these treats when there's no line to get in. It's just not done!

So, we waited in line for mere minutes before we were ushered in. Then we realized that there was no line because half of Hoboken had already crammed themselves into the tiny bake shop! I understand that this is typical and part of the mystique surrounding the Carlo's experience. Somehow the cupcakes taste better if you have to fight your way up to the cabinet, pushing, shoving, biting if necessary... Somehow, the chocolate on the cannoli tastes even richer after being crammed into a box by a loud, gloveless Italian-American bakery clerk!

Are the pastries overrated? Maybe. But you won't convince my kids of that! We enjoyed every last crumb!

This photo is taken thousands of times a day in some form or another

Are these really worth standing in this line for?

Worth it!

Kids and Kites

One way to salvage a cold windy picnic for the kids is to produce a kite that flies like a dizzy swallow all hopped up on Red Bull and turn them loose! My friend Jared produced just such a kite and several kids miraculously and immediately forgot all about the cold for the better part of an hour!

This kid nearly joined the kite in the wind coming of Long Island Sound.

The kite just flew tight dive-bombing corkscrews at random

It'll be right back for...

...another strafing run

Lean into it, or fly with it!

Roger Williams Zoo Field Trip

At the beginning of June I got to accompany my kindergartener to the Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence, RI for her class field trip! We arrived about 25 minutes before her classmates' bus so we watched as one bus after another disgorged its passengers in a steady stream at the zoo entrance. The far parking lot was sea of yellow buses, so we knew we wouldn't be alone. Hundreds of roudy kids from schools all over the area jostled, pushed, shouted in anticipation of the day at the zoo.

It turned out to be a beautiful day!

Here is an assortment of things we saw at the zoo:

Crowds

Dragonflies

Bees!!!

Weed Pulling

Bathing Beauties

Bathing Birdies

Friends

Snoozing Snow Leopard

Center School 5th Grade Presents: The Wizard of Oz

So, I followed the paving stone path on into Center School last Friday evening where I was treated to the fantastic 5th grade production of The Wizard of Oz. There were two significant challenges to photographing this event. First, there were very few lights on the actors for much of the production, which made it quite difficult to get clear pictures. And second, there is no air conditioning in Center School which resulted in some very hot and uncomfortable actors, audience members, and photographers. Seats by windows in the gymnasium were at a premium because the outside air provided some relief from the heat and humidity.

I found that there was lots more light near the back of the stage than there was up front so I ended up shooting some from backstage and from the wings to try and get some clear shots. This had the added advantage to putting me close to a few windows and open doors and the extra ventilation they provided(here I discovered a few of the more clever kids also trying to escape the heat while they waited for their next scene).

I was pretty happy with some of the pictures I got of the performance and I hope that the participants find the gallery enjoyable.

Here are a few of the highlights along with a link to the extensive gallery of the production and the after party.

Play Ball!

Spring is here. So, oil up the glove, dig the cleats out of storage, and grab your cap 'cause its baseball season!

Here are a few pictures I shot while watching my favorite team this evening.

Great coaching

Unfortunately, not everyone that wanted to play got picked for a team...

Uh, he's out, right coach?

Kiteboarding - Conimicut State Park

April 25, 2009. One evening the first Spring we were living in New England we went in search of lighthouses and ended up at Conimicut Point Lighthouse near Warwick, RI. We were there at sunset and I noticed a young family playing around with what looked like the biggest kite I'd ever seen. I began taking pictures and eventually struck up a conversation with Jenne and Doug. It turns out they were practicing with the sail for their kiteboard set getting ready for summer, or maybe kitesurfing is a more accurate term. Regardless of what it's called they strap a huge kite to themselves, step on a board and let the wind propel them across the water. These two were just trying to learn to fly the kite on the sand. I even took a turn.

This little boy enjoyed watching the kite drag his mom across the sand.

Having a good laugh after the kite took another nose dive.

And she's off again.

This is my favorite shot of the day

And here I am trying my luck at the kite. I was not very successful.

May Day at Florence Griswold

This afternoon I noticed my daughter was scrapbooking photos from last summer. I was impressed with a few of them and since I didn't post them before, here they are.

Each Spring the Florence Griswold Museum has a Community Free Day on the first Saturday in May. This past year I took the kids to enjoy the art, to bask in the warm weather, and to partake liberally of the free ice cream!

This shot of the great tree leaning out over the river is the one that really caught my eye today. It's no wonder this was an artists' retreat.

You can tell that this kid was thrilled to be out in the sunshine.

The Rambles is a site specific stickwork sculpture.

Guests are encouraged to wander around and through the sculpture.

You Can Help Pic a Winner

I am entering some photos in the upcoming Guilford Fair and I need help. I am struggling to choose between these two photos. I am allowed to enter only 10 photos total in various categories. I have narrowed down my top 9 choices and am now left choosing between these two for the final slot. Which one could win that blue ribbon? If you have an opinion let me know soon. Thanks!

Chateau Sur Mer - Newport, RI

Here are a few select shots from a recent trip to Chateau Sur Mer one of the oldest mansions in Newport, RI.

These mushrooms seemed a bit out of place on this perfectly manicured croquet pitch. I had never seen a croquet pitch before, least of all one with fungi sprouting up in the middle of it...
